About Us
At SoulInDaHood, we believe food is not just sustenance; it's a celebration of culture and tradition. Our food truck is dedicated to delivering authentic soul food that resonates with the spirit of community. Join us on our journey of flavor.
Our Story
SoulInDaHood is the vision of chef and owner Donyel Howell, a Boston-raised cook with more than three decades behind the stove. My culinary roots go back to family kitchens, neighborhood cookouts, and the kind of soul food spots where the flavors hit before the name does. I grew up around food that told a story — seasoned pots, passed-down traditions, and plates that brought people together long before social media existed.
I started with soul food, but over the years I pushed myself beyond the familiar. I studied and cooked across styles — Asian, West Indian, Italian, Mediterranean, and more. I spent roughly five years as a sous chef, sharpening my skills, learning professional systems, and mastering the tempo of a real kitchen. But no matter how far I went, I kept coming back to the flavors I grew up with — bold, comforting, and unapologetically real.
At some point, I realized the truth: working for someone else wasn’t enough. I had a vision bigger than the positions I held — a vision that mixed soul food, street culture, big-city energy, and the authenticity of the neighborhoods that raised me. That vision became SoulInDaHood.
SoulInDaHood is my way of bringing everything I’ve learned — every dish, every influence, every late shift — back to the community in my own style. It’s built on hood energy, real ingredients, and flavors that feel like home. No shortcuts, no watered-down seasoning, no corporate “fusion” ideas. Just real food with real soul.
And the growth isn’t random — it’s intentional:
Phase 1 – Ghost Kitchen (2026):
A fast-launch system that lets us deliver SoulInDaHood plates straight to the city through delivery apps and pickup options. It’s the perfect way to build consistency, dial in quality, and reach customers quickly without losing our identity.
Phase 2 – Food Truck:
A fully wrapped, street-ready SoulInDaHood truck that will move through Boston with the same energy as the city itself. Pop-ups, events, neighborhoods, nightlife — the truck brings the hood to the streets and the streets to the plate.
SoulInDaHood isn’t just a company — it’s a lifetime of experience, sacrifice, ideas, and determination finally taking shape. It’s something I’ve been building mentally for years, planning on paper, and perfecting through every job I’ve taken.
This is more than a business plan.
It’s a mission. A movement. A place where soul meets the streets — and everyone eats.
